A pedagogy of cultural redux: provoking intertextual moments in 'third' space

Drawn to Homi K. Bhabha’s location of culture in a ‘third’ space, I trace the source of this discursive space in Bhabha’s literary habits and habitats. Reading in a hybrid space in-between books, something new and otherwise was emerging from the ‘reads’ ― culture, rather than being transmitted, was becoming productive and performative. Educed into reading Rohinton Mistry’s A Fine Balance as an invocation from an Indo-Canadian student’s narrated autobiography through language and literacy, I recently receive, as a gift from a graduate student, Mistry’s The Scream. A cultural remix of author Rohinton Mistry and illustrator Tony Urquhart in an exquisite juxtaposing of text and image provokes the trace of a scream to take an exilic leap from the pag! e and to trespass across the borders of pedagogy to haunt the corrugated corridors and boxed-in templates of academe. A scream provokes a desire to return to Mistry’s A Fine Balance tracking again the routes in-between the fragments of storied passages ― the interweaving of storied lives. I

respond to a call for papers with the provocation of a cultural redux through Bhabha’s conception of ‘third’ space and through the post-reconceptualist movement in curriculum theorizing. Mistry’s scream – silent yet piercing ― emits signs and signals for trafficking in cultural exchange ― resists the haunted dictations of the colonial present. Bhabha calls for us to attend to the global at-home and I am learning to listen closely to a polyphony of voices at-work in the intertext. The gift of a book becomes a (w)rite of passage. In responding to the call for proposals, I want to provoke diasporic productivity at-work in a ‘third’ discourse disturbing empire, risking ! erasure, and opening to the generative possibilities of cultur! al redux .


Patricia Palulis is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa, in Canada. She obtained her PhD at the University of British Columbia in curriculum and instruction. Her research interests involve language, literacy, culture and spatiality. She has extensive and diverse teaching experience in England, Japan and Libya as well as in Canada. Her publications include co-authored papers in The Journal of Curriculum Theorizing, Transnational Curriculum Inquiry, and Educational Insights.
